Our focus is on watching the withdrawals of returning students around school start (referred to as “melt”). While the overall melt rate of the Re-Reg student cohort is .75% better than prior year, the Re-Reg cohort is slightly behind in volume & rate compared to forecast. We are through most of our peak weeks with regard to returning students, but are still watching some high volumes.
Student Retention Trending Behind
The retention rates of new & returning students is trending behind prior year by .7% points through week 6, compared to last year. This is mainly driven by the withdrawal rates of New Students where retention is tracking 160 basis points worse than prior year. The start up experience for schools has been a challenge with early on system stability problems, summit & email issues combined with long wait times in customer service. These themes are coming back to us directly from parents through the new withdrawal form.
Operations Team Focused on Production Support
To ensure our students, families and school staff have quickest resolution to their questions and issues, the operations team is all hands on deck to staff the multiple operational support queues the schools utilize. To relieve the increased volume this year, several additional contractors are being on boarded to increase the turnaround time on items such as staff accounts and teacher materials orders. A big thank you to both the national and regional operations folks for their dedication and commitment to bringing this support to the schools.
Electronic Withdrawal Form K-5 Parent Reason Trends
To date, we have received 1,275 parent responses to the withdrawal form survey for K-5 students. Sixty-five percent (65%) of the reasons communicated are represented in the top six choices: Student not motivated to complete work in this environment (15%); Too much time commitment for the learning coach (12%); Lack of socialization (10%); Number of required Class Connect sessions (10%); and Accepted into another offering that was the family’s first choice (9%) and Learning coach no longer available (9%). We are currently digging into the verbatims and other grade-level subgroups and will share additional insights as they become available.
Academic Leaders Professional Development
Last week, we kicked off our SY16-17 Academic Leaders professional development sessions. Sessions will be held the second and fourth Friday of each month and facilitated by the experts in the field. Our first session focused on how we will measure the Academic Plan implementation and student outcomes. School leaders received an overview of the new Academic Plan and Assessment Dashboard, and a preview of upcoming enhancements to the regional academic trackers. The teams reviewed the assessment plan requirements and used regional breakout sessions to further discuss and provide feedback on the various metrics and dashboards, and essential topics for upcoming professional development sessions.
September Academic Plan School Consultations
For the month of September our 1:1 school consultations will concentrate on instructional cycles and the action steps to be taken before, during and after each instructional cycle. The teams will ensure we are differentiating our instructional support according to each students instructional level, and subsequently communicating the differentiated offerings and requirements to students and learning coaches.
Supporting Teachers with Summit, Email and Platform Questions
Teacher Effectiveness staff members participated in three Open Office Hours this past week providing information and teacher specific answers for Summit, email, and Middle School Transition. In addition, staff were on hand to answer platform questions. Additional Open Office Hours are scheduled for Wednesday.

We have 125 students assigned and working with the FASTeam! Can I get a “yee-haw”? J I thought it might be helpful for principals/supervisors to know which teachers have referred students to FAST and which have not, along with how MANY students each teacher has referred. If a teacher’s name is not on the list, he/she has not made any FAST referrals. Remember, generally it’s about 10% of the student population that needs FAST support. We’re sitting at 6% right now. Please encourage those with only 1 referral or those who are not on the list at all to refer!
